Charles Schulz and the Zamboni Machine

From the early years of the Peanuts comic strip, Charles Schulz included ice skating and ice hockey themes. A couple of years after opening the Redwood Empire Ice Arena in April, 1969 Schulz depicted a skating Snoopy thinking about how most ice rinks have a "Resurfacing Machine". Even though the Zamboni machine has become synonymous as the machine that cleans the ice, it is in fact a brand name for the most popular ice resurfacer built by Frank Zamboni beginning in the early 1940's.

It wasn't until 1980 that the Zamboni machine started to appear in the comic strip.

The Zamboni machines appeared a total of 47 times in the Peanuts comic over the next 20 years.
The last Zamboni machine strip drawn by Charles Schulz was published October 31, 1999
In the Arena's 38 year history there have been four Zamboni machines used at the rink. The most recent one was painted with the Peanuts characters in an ice skating scene.
